Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media platforms have become a powerful tool for communication, but they also have a significant downside: the rapid spread of fake news. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, social media has played an influential role in shaping public opinion, especially during crises such as the Boko Haram insurgency. However, the ease of sharing information without verification has led to the widespread dissemination of misinformation and fake news, often with detrimental consequences for security, public health, and social cohesion. This study investigates the ethical implications of fake news on social media in Maiduguri, focusing on how it spreads, the role of social media users, and the ethical responsibility of content creators, platform owners, and consumers.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The spread of fake news on social media platforms in Maiduguri has led to confusion, panic, and misinformation, particularly regarding security issues, public health, and political matters. The ethical implications of this phenomenon are far-reaching, as the spread of unverified or misleading information undermines public trust and can exacerbate existing conflicts. This study seeks to explore the ethical responsibilities of social media users and platform owners in preventing the spread of fake news, as well as the consequences of failing to do so in Maiduguri.
