Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study

In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, social media has played an influential role in shaping public opinion, especially during crises such as the Boko Haram insurgency. However, the ease of sharing information without verification has led to the widespread dissemination of misinformation and fake news, often with detrimental consequences for security, public health, and social cohesion.
